Experienced Controller needed to join an established and growing non-profit headquartered in Orange County. The Controller will oversee accounting, financial reporting, grants management, compliance, and internal controls while supporting leadership in making data-driven decisions. This role will be responsible for developing and monitoring budgets, preparing financial reports, ensuring regulatory compliance, and strengthening internal financial processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in financial management, analytical skills, and the ability to provide strategic insights to drive organizational success. This role is full time and directly reports to the CFO.
Controller Responsibilities include:
- Lead all accounting operations, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Prepare monthly financial statements, budget variance reports, and cash flow projections.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit-specific accounting requirements.
- Develop financial policies and procedures to strengthen internal controls.
- Oversee the development and monitoring of the annual budget.
- Manage restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring accurate grant tracking and reporting.
- Work with program staff to develop grant budgets and ensure compliance with
- Serve as the primary contact for external auditors and manage the annual audit process.
- Ensure accurate and timely filing of Form 990 and other regulatory reports.
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations.
- Partner with HR to oversee payroll processing and benefits administration (experience with UKG)
- Ensure payroll compliance with IRS and Department of Labor regulations.
Qualified Candidates should have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred).
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in nonprofit financial management.
- Strong knowledge of fund accounting, grant management, and nonprofit financial compliance.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite)
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working with health plans, federal or foundation grants.
- Knowledge of nonprofit tax laws and reporting requirements.
- Familiarity with financial reporting for the Board of Directors.
