Being “Apart” of a New Company

One of the most common errors I see in written cover letters or thank you notes to employers is the misuse of the word apart.  Here is an example of how it shows up in business writing:

“After reviewing your company culture and opportunity for growth, I am convinced that I would love to be apart of your company growth in the next few years.”

Apart is defined as: separated by a distance; at a specified distance from each other in time or space.  So, when you use this word you are effectively saying that you would like to be “separated from the company growth in the next few years.”  I don’t think this is what you are trying to say!

It’s a small thing, but one that candidates make all the time.  Take a moment to reread your cover letter before sending in case you are in danger of this offense.
